TMJ Disorder Massage

Temporomandibular disorder

For those of you who have been diagnosed with TMJ disorder, you know exactly what we’re talking about. For those of you who don’t or who wonder if that’s the reason you wake up with a headache, neck pain, jaw pain, teeth pain, facial pain… keep reading.

As the team at WebMD describes:

“Your temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are in front of each ear. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side, so you can talk, chew, and yawn. Common symptoms (of TMJ Disorder) include:

  • Pain or tenderness in your face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when you chew, speak, or open your mouth wide
  • Problems when you try to open your mouth wide
  • Jaws that get “stuck” or “lock” in the open- or closed-mouth position
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth or chew. This may or may not be painful.
  • A tired feeling in your face
  • Trouble chewing or a sudden uncomfortable bite — as if the upper and lower teeth are not fitting together properly
  • Swelling on the side of your face

You may also have toothaches, headaches, neck aches, dizziness, earaches, hearing problems, upper shoulder pain, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).”

Relief from TMD-related pain

Often, your dentist will be one of the first ones to notice signs of TMJ Disorder. There can be wearing down of teeth surfaces or indentations left on the sides of your tongue. You may experience pain in your jaw joint while your hygienist cleans your teeth. Your dental team may advise fitting you for a bite guard to wear at night when we’re usually least aware that we’re clenching or grinding our teeth in our sleep.

Sometimes it’s the noise created when you grind your teeth that a partner will notice and bring to your attention. It’s a noise unlike any other! Get it checked out asap! Bite guards are a great way of protecting your teeth from cracks or wearing down and help relieve pressure in your jaw.

Few people know that massage therapy can be extremely effective in relieving the pain and discomfort experienced in the face, jaw, teeth and ears if you suffer from TMJ Disorder. Jenny Faison has undergone speciality training in a technique designed to significantly ease the symptoms of TMJ Disorder. This massage focuses on the head, face, neck, upper shoulders and includes internal mouth work. Please contact us for more information or with any questions.

If you’ve been diagnosed with TMJ Disorder, book in for your massage sessions and get some much-needed relief!

Calm Beauty is my new place-to-go for massages. The ladies are amazing with excellent technical skills and beyond friendly services! I highly recommend all of the massage therapists: Niamh, Karen and the two Jennys! Treat yourself with some massage or facial 🙂 I'll definitely be back for more treatments.

I absolutely love going to the ladies at Calm. I have had a massage from each therapist and I can safely say every therapist is fantastic. I am very picky when it comes to massages, and they are the best I've ever had at Calm.

Calm Beauty is a little oasis in Dublin 3. They have fantastic measures in place in the salon to make it feel so safe right now, without in anyway compromising on your treatment. I can not recommend Jenny Fitzpatrick highly enough for massage, reflexology or facials. She is literally amazing. Try the Urban Oasis - it’s time you will be glad you invested in yourself

Maire S

The most soothing, warm and welcoming spot in Dublin. An incredible relief from the general anxiety of the last year.. I genuinely felt lighter and brighter leaving, then when I arrived and it will be the first place I go when it's safe to do so again.
