Aromatherapy Massage

Essential oils

Aromatherapy massage combines the benefits of Swedish massage with the use of essential oils. Massage therapy is one of the most effective ways to apply essential oils.

Essential oils are extracted from herbs, flowers, and fruits. They add a beautifully fragrant aroma to any carrier oil which can then stimulate the senses by either invigorating and uplifting the mind and body or inducing a sense of calm and relaxation. Essential oils possess therapeutic properties which can be used to improve health, physical, and emotional wellbeing.

Carrier oils help to dilute and carry the essential oils into the skin. They are plant-based oils, such as sunflower oil or grapeseed oil, which absorb easily into the skin and have no strong smells that would alter the aroma of the essential oils.

Each blend of essential oils is specific to the individual client. The oils are chosen depending on their therapeutic qualities and can target the client’s main concerns, i.e. stress, insomnia, skin conditions, muscle or joint pain, allergies, etc.

Because essential oils are chemical compounds, you should always have an aromatherapy massage with a qualified aromatherapist.

Therapeutic properties

It is very important that the client resonates with the aroma of the blend, so we work closely together to mix the right blend of oils for you on the day of your treatment. To do this, the aromatherapist and will spend time discussing your goals for the treatment. Three essential oils are usually selected, a top note, a middle note and a base note.

The note of an essential oil means the rate at which an essential oil evaporates. Top notes seem to jump out of the bottle, and you’ll notice their scent right away. Citrus oils like orange or lemon oil are some of the most well-known top notes. Middle notes evaporate less quickly and are often balancing, multi-purpose oils like lavender. Base notes are heavier, grounding notes; woody essential oils with tree roots like cedar are examples of base notes.

The overall goal of an aromatherapy massage is balance. So, if your energy levels have been low, your blend may include a larger proportion of top notes to help bring your energy up. If you have been busy at work or have a lot on your mind, your blend may include a lower percentage of top note and more of middle or base. It’s all about balance!
